On Friday I went to see it with my boyfriend and unfortunately I was rather disappointed; maybe I expected too much.

I’m a big Spielberg fan in general, but I found this film poorly written. There are scenes I find inconsistent (I’m thinking of the chase scene where the hero goes to find his girlfriend; he should have been caught 36 times…). It has undeniable qualities, including the acting of the two main characters, but the main flaw is that the film doesn’t tell the story I wanted it to tell.
In science fiction, “Disclosure Day” is the day humanity learns of the existence of extraterrestrials beyond any doubt. I hadn’t researched the film beforehand, so perhaps I created unfounded expectations, but I think Spielberg missed the mark.
Without spoiling anything, the entire film recounts the events leading up to Disclosure Day and ends there, whereas I would have liked to see what happened next.
One of my favorite films is Close Encounters of the Third Kind, also by Spielberg, which already told, and did better, all the events leading up to this encounter.
For a film called Disclosure Day, I would have liked it to begin with the revelation of the existence of extraterrestrials and then explore the consequences, including the religious, philosophical, and ethical implications. These themes are touched upon, but only superficially. (Especially considering the fate the extraterrestrials suffer in the film; there were so many potential plot twists.) Spielberg could have told a sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind instead of rehashing something that’s already been done countless times in many different films. We would have had an original subject for cinema.
Instead, we have a film we’ve already seen, lacking originality in its message.
Yes, I know the article is short; I had planned to write something more substantial, but I didn’t like the film (And I don’t generally enjoy talking about things I don’t like), and more importantly, I think I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to appreciate it, given some things that are on my mind right now.
I promise, I’ll make up for it very soon.
Hugs and kisses, see you soon!
