Hey Orchid, where did your passion for video games come from?
As I’ve already told you, I grew up in foster care, so I didn’t have my own game console or PC for a long time.
Before I was 10, I had no idea such a thing existed. I had to be invited to a classmate’s birthday party to discover the Nintendo Switch and Mario Kart 8!
Okay, let’s be clear, I was absolutely terrible! I spent all my time going the wrong way and falling into every hole.
(Yeah, they hadn’t activated the antenna mode, and yet it would have really helped!)
Yet I had the time of my life. I was, and still am, fascinated by the fact that moving buttons makes a character move on the screen. I find it magical. It makes the world on the screen almost palpable, tangible. It’s like magic!
For a long time, my few gaming sessions were always at friends’ or boyfriends’ houses.
Do I choose my friends based on the size of their Steam library? Maybe! Who was the idiot who said size didn’t matter?
More seriously, I had to wait until I had a salary to really start playing video games more seriously. The Switch 2 came out, and I broke the bank. Now, I’m just a little less bad at Mario Kart. I hardly ever fall into the pits anymore, and I manage to stay on the track most of the time…
So you’ve become a real gamer now?

Today I’m starting to play PC games. My boyfriend upgraded his entire setup, so he kindly gave me his old one.
I finally have my own Steam account! Okay, I don’t have many games of my own, just a few indie titles from a Humble Bundle and Diablo 4 to play with a friend. (That thing is addictive! I played it for 10 minutes, and yet my Steam account shows 6 hours of playtime… that must be what Einstein was talking about when he mentioned the relativity of time.)
Finally, thank you to family sharing which allows me to still have access to a ton of other games.
So, what are you playing at?
Well, that’s exactly why I might need your help. I’m discovering a whole new world that I don’t know anything about, so I’m a little lost.
I typed the top most played games worldwide into a search engine.
I saw game names like:
- Fortnite (I know the dances!)
- Roblox (I didn’t understand what that was)
- Minecraft (That one sounds good)
- League of Legends (I think it’s based on an anime (no, I’m just kidding, but Arcane is awesome))
- Counter-Strike (A bang bang boom boom game)
The last two are competitive games, and I admit I’m a little intimidated by the idea of competing against players who have been playing since they were babies! 😱
Right now, I’m discovering The Witness, a chill single-player game with puzzles. I’ll talk about it soon, I think.
Please feel free to recommend games that you think are essential for any gamer; I’m eager to discover lots of different genres.
Until then, hugs and kisses, see you soon!
